Worldwide business are being ruled by projects

Nowadays it is more common to find Project-centric Organizations and Matrix Organizations than Functional Organizations and Project Management practices have acquired great popularity during the last years.

Project Management methodologies have been proved to be successful strategies to achieve business goals as to produce happy customers and strong relationships, avoiding waste and delivering projects within the deadlines or even earlier.

What is project management?

Project Management

According to the PMI (Project Management Institute) Project Management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet project’s requirements.

This knowledge includes different processes and paths that well documented and communicated guarantees projects’ success.

It is important to mention that the Project Manager is not responsible of creating project’s deliverables but he is the one who knows how to manage them better and is responsible for keeping time, cost and quality on budget. He or she has an overall view of the risks, constraints, milestones and understands the importance of keeping the project plan, its resources, the schedule and the critical path on track.

The project manager is responsible for the follow up on every project phase:

  • Initiating
  • Planing
  • Executing
  • Monitoring and controlling
  • Closing

Even though he is not a technical expert (or a developer) a specialized project manager is able to organize project’s tasks applying best practices as to produce a motivated and happy team, which also means a productive team.

In order to attain this, project managers must develop specific but strong skills. First, they must be great communicators so all the stakeholders are up to date and not a single detail of the project is missed out. He has to make sure that the project team knows exactly what to do and when to do it, maintaining the scope during the lifetime of the project.

They are also able to delegate, organize, coordinate, analyze critical situations and make important decisions. They also know how to behave under pressure keeping their composure. They are risk tolerant, confident, assertive, decisive and inspiring leaders that will stand with and not against their teams as to avoid stress and lack of happiness so everyone perform their job as best as possible.
